Le Petite Fiddles Exhibit Unveiled in Downtown Opelousas

(Opelousas, LA) — A new exhibit, Le Petite Fiddles, was unveiled Saturday, November 28, 2020 in downtown Opelousas. Located at 232 Court Street at the corner window of the former Shutes Building, the window front exhibit features wooden fiddles painted by fourteen artists from around the Opelousas area.

The petite fiddle exhibit is a spin-off of the popular Fiddle Mania exhibit, an oversized painted fiddle public art exhibit introduced in 2010 by Opelousas Main Street. Not only is the fiddle one of the most recognized instruments in Cajun and Creole music, but it also lends itself as a component used in branding for the City of Opelousas.

Le Petite Fiddles features art by Cathy Hebert, Cindy Pitre, Gabrielle Janis, Gerri Soileau, Ivy Carriere, Larry Primeaux, Michelle Fontenot, Michelle Johnson-Colligan, Morgan Glasscock, Neketta Guillory, Robbie Sebastien, Shantall Rovairs, Sue Boagni, and Kristy Lalonde.

Led by Opelousas Tourism, along with the Celebrate Opelousas 300 Commission and Opelousas Main Street, the Petite Fiddle project's goal is to inspire others with beautifully crafted fiddles as they have become an icon for the community.

The Petite Fiddle Project was part of the activities designed to celebrate the city's 300th anniversary. This project was used as a fundraiser for the corner lot of Court and South streets project by Opelousas Main Street. Other projects and activities included Boxed Art, Stories Captured: An Oral History Project, Tricentennial Mural located on Delta Grand, and Community Celebration Mural during the year.
